Day of The Triffids
Strongly influenced by H. G. Wells’ The War of The Worlds, Wyndham’s post-apocalyptic novel displays many similarities to Wells’ seminal sci-fi work, though differs in many imaginative, novel and inventive ways that make The Day of The Triffids an enduring classic in its own right. Firstly, its main villains are plants. In a concept that was adapted to comedy effect in The Little Shop of Horrors film directed by Roger Corman, Wyndham’s terrifying plant-monsters are anything but funny, and terrorise the human race, or what’s left of it after they make their assault on earth. Bill Masen and a small group of strangers in London are among only a few humans left sighted after an epic green meteor shower blinds everyone who watches. With the Triffids closing in around them, Wyndham’s work studies the psychology and very different personalities of the survivors, and portrays a human will to overcome that is both dogged and touching in the face of truly extraneous circumstances. Adapted for the big screen in 1962 and a cult television series in 1981, The Day of The Triffids is also a major 2009 television event, starring Joely Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave, Brian Cox and comedian Eddie Izzard.
